Music – What does it say about where you’ve been?

Ok, folks.  So I’ve been working on this for a while.  You know how it goes.  Your friends post thirty days worth of music.  Each day has a different theme.  I’ve been wanting to try it, because like most people, I love music.  However, unlike most people I have really great taste.  If you disagree, well, everyone has the right to be wrong.

Well, there is a slight problem, I couldn’t get past day one.  “Day 1 – Your Favorite Song.”  I don’t have a favorite song.  ‘How can that be?’, you ask, ‘everyone has a favorite.’  Well, leaving Elementary School, I haven’t really seen the world in favorites/least favorites.  But, I think it’s time to make my first ever Favorite Playlist.

So, here’s how I solve the problem.  I’m going to work backward.  Surely, by the end of this I will have done enough introspection to have a favorite playlist.  So, Starting at Day 30:

Your favorite song at this time last year.

This is when itunes comes in.  Originally it was programs like itunes that lead to the undoing of my fav/least fav mentality.  It was so easy to simply download any song you wanted, and listen whenever you wanted.  But, the cool thing about itunes is with one click, you can reorder entire music library.  So, to figure out what I was listening to last year, I rearranged my library based on the date the song was added.  If you haven’t tried it, it’s Pretty cool.  You should check it out

Here’s mine:

Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind

Falling Slowly – The Frames

They Can’t Take That Away From Me – Billie Holiday

You Found Me – the Fray

Avenue Q

The Sound of Arrows – Into the Clouds.

Was  that really a year ago?  Some of those songs have faded from my playlist, and some are still going strong.  So, what’s my favorite?  Well, you’re going to have to wait.  Because I took it one step farther.  How about this time two years ago?

Remember:

I Got a Feeling – BEP

Jay Brannon

And of course,

It’s Getting Hot in Here – Jenny Owens Young

Remember the soundtrack of summer.  Road trips, concerts, friends, brunches, parties all come back so vividly.  It’s amazing the sensory recall, isn’t it?

And, I do have to say remember:

Shake It – Metro Station

Three years ago!!!

Ok, so what’s your summer play list like now?  What will you look back on in a years time?  Will it be Adeles’ new Album 21?  How about Gossip – Love Long Distance or La Roux – Bulletproof?  Will these new songs over come old ones, or will they fade as well?

Most importantly, what will you be jamming to next year, and what memories do these new songs have in store?

Ok, ok, so now the moment you’ve all been waiting for.  My number one.  Easy choice.  My number one combines two unusual voices, but with a genre I love.  While award winning, it didn’t really get the love it deserved.  So dust off your snuggies, and cuddle up to…

Please Read the Letter – Alison Krauss and Robert Plant.

So there you have it.  In retrospect, it’s amazing where these songs have gone with me.  Two break-ups, two new states, five new national parks, a new relationship, moving to a new country, two new jobs, dozens of new cities, and a whole lot of earphones.
